The video “How Social Media Shapes Identity” has the main goal of explaining how society has drastically changed due to the use of social media. There were many examples displayed by the speaker, but the one that I felt really set the tone for the overall speech was talking about racial emojis. Racial emojis are the emojis people use to express themselves but with the addition of using their actual race; this informs everyone that sees this factor to know what race you are. She goes on to show how this is an example of a "co-constitutive entanglement of technology and human natures” because it means that we are the ones constructing and creating the technology, but the technology also constructs us in a sense. In a society as a whole, this is one of the many ways in which people are being seen through social media and how it is able to give some information about us that in a way “constructs” how we think and act.
Social media has influenced me in many different ways, but I feel like the two biggest ways were educating myself on topics I didn’t learn about at school and having lower self-esteem. When it comes to figuring out stuff through social media, I have learned a lot about different identities and religions that shape a person. Tik Tok is one platform where I am able to really see the different ways people express themselves and the correct ways to be respectful towards them. This is ultimately positive because it helps not only me but a lot of other people understand what to do in relation to other people. On a more negative note, seeing models and pretty people all over social media set the standards high for looks can make me feel insecure because I do not look like that. It is true that there is photoshop involved and many other contributions to make them look a certain way, but it can still be hard for me to accept who I am while looking at others with perfect beauty standards. This also affects me indirectly because I have many friends who feel the same way and it can be challenging. I definitely agree that social media has shaped society's identity. Social media has made a huge impact in my life and I am also aware of what it can do for my friends and family. I feel like it can have negative and positive impacts that could eventually contribute to both the growth and/or downfall of the future. Overall, it absolutely can change people’s identities and I believe it will be continuing to change many times throughout time.
